About Us
Actors, Musicians, Songwriters, Playwrights, Devisers,
but most of all Storytellers
Instrumental Theatre Company produces live theatre and events showcasing the multiple talents of actors, musicians, writers, and storytellers. We create highly collaborative, musically inspired work and seek to foster a community full of music and stories.
Our work fuses theater and music in an inseparable manner that challenges the conventions and traditions of musical theatre, drama, and concerts.
As a new Chicago based theatre company, we aim to inspire audiences to be kinder and more generous, provide an empathetic space that builds community, and a home for multi-hyphenate artists to express themselves and share their talents with our audiences.

Our Story
Instrumental Theatre Company was founded by Artistic Director Skylar Grieco and kicked off with the Mixtape New Play Fesival Vol. 1. in March 2025. This event featured three short original plays with music and original songs performed by the cast in an intimate reading at Uncommon Ground.
Following this sold out reading event, the company set sights on its first fully staged production, an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull. This site specific play with music was performed for a fully sold out three week run in September 2025 at Berger Park in Edgewater. The adaptation, directed by Skylar Grieco, featured original music devised by the cast and was performed both outside against the backdrop of Lake Michigan and inside the historic Berger Park North Mansion. The production received positive reviews and kick-started an enthusiasm for a new approach to merging music and theatre in the Chicago area.

Instrumental has been focused on growing it's community of artists and audiences through events, projects, and workshops including a BIT BOP BANG: A 48 Hour Musical Theatre Event, The Mixtape New Works Festival Vol. 2, and an upcoming series of choral and instrumental community events in summer 2026.
